History[]

Grand Dad first appeared in SM64: THE BOOTLEG DIMENSION as the main antagonist. When Mario disobeyed Professor E. Gadd by entering the failed painting experiment, he fell into the Bootleg Dimension. As Mario was getting afraid of all of the bootleg inhabitants, Grand Dad appeared before him, and said he came in peace, not wanting to hurt the plumber. After Mario mentions a portal as a way he got into the dimension, Grand Dad mentions he’s been stuck in the same shitty game for forever and humbly requests if he could go back with him to the real world. Mario then accepted his request and took him back to his own world.

After trying to greet himself to Toad, he instead bootlegged the fungus after coming into contact with him via a handshake, which surprised both Mario and himself, finding out about his new powers. After Mario and him went on a brief bootlegging spree, Mario requested if he could turn everything back to normal. Instead of obliging, he revealed his frustrations with bootlegs being trampled, teased and neglected for their appearance, and intended to show the real world the same pain they went through too. He then started to bootleg Mario's world after and revealed himself as a villain. After a brief fight in the castle, Mario took a defeated Grand Dad back to the Bootleg Dimension through the failed experiment and subsequently destroyed it, turning everything back to normal.

He would later appear as the "Ghost of Sh!tty Games" in SMG4: Welcome To The Kushroom Mingdom, where he grants SMG3's wish to build a kingdom similar to the one he lives in except "cooler". For whatever reason he did not find a counterpart for Mario and Luigi, but SMG3 decided that Mario and Luigi could be their own Kushroom Mingdom counterparts.

He would also appear as one of the many fighters in ♫ The Ultimate Smash Bros ♫, but only when Sakurai goes on a rampage as he runs away in fright.

He also appeared in The Grand Mario Hotel under the title of "Bootleg Mario", in which he was one of many Marios who went to the Grand Mario Hotel. He was shown to still hate Mario before the latter's treason to Don Mario, in which the hotel successfully collaborated to get rid of Mario from the hotel.

His 8-bit appearance made a cameo in SMG4: AREA 64 as Mario was emptying a toxic waste can.

He made a cameo in SMG4: Mario Battle Royale. It is unknown why he died in that episode. He then reappears in SMG4: Stupid Mario 3D All-Stars as one of the Marios from the game that comes to life. He refers to Mario as his arch-nemesis, showing he still hates Mario.

Personality[]

Grand Dad is often quite villainous and has foul intentions, but his main goal has been wanting bootlegs to be appreciated as they’ve been scorned and hated for their appearance for as long as they’ve been around. This shows a slight sympathetic sense of him, as his villainous deeds were mostly just to have bootlegs be more appreciated and show everyone the pain they went through too. Being a Mario himself, he is shown to love spaghetti much like all the other Marios. He’s also been implied to hold grudges for a long time, as he’s shown to hate Mario's guts due to being sent back by him to the Bootleg Dimension, and refers to him as his arch-nemesis in Stupid Mario 3D All-Stars which takes place around 3 years later. He also seems to hate minor annoyances, such as flies, as they pester him.

Powers and Abilities[]

Bootleg Touch: As seen in his first appearance, touching something or someone will turn them into a bootleg version of themselves, as seen with Toad when he tries to greet himself to him, only to turn the sentient piece of fungus into a bootleg. This effect can be passed from physical contact or from a thunder blast from his fingertips, as seen when he goes on a bootleg rampage around town.

Bootleg Fireball: Being basically a copy of Mario, he’s able to use fireballs that turn others into bootlegs, as seen in The Grand Mario Hotel, where he tries to hit Mario off the mountain of spaghetti with a fireball but instead hits someone else, turning them into a watermelon with Mario’s mustache and hat on.

Ghost-like Powers: Being titled “the ghost of sh!tty games” as seen in SMG4: Welcome to the Kushroom Mingdom, he seems to have some omnipresence like a genie, as SMG3 freed him from the bootleg cartridge found in the dumpster just as a genie would come out of their lamp when you rub it. Thus, he’s granted the ability to fly and capture things for SMG3’s wish of his own Mushroom Kingdom. (However, it is unknown if this is the same one from The Bootleg Dimension.)

Trivia[]

  • Similar to Waluigi during the Waluigi Arc, Grand Dad is portrayed as being a sympathetic character while still being a villain.
  • He is one of the few Mario characters to not be from the actual series.
  • He, Chris Gordman, Swagmaster69696969696, Bingus, and Hal Monitor's voices are all created in Speakonia.
  • A majority of Grand Dad's voice lines that aren't text-to-speech are extracts from the streamer Vinesauce Joel's reaction to the bootleg game he originates from. Most notably the "GRAND DAD!?" and "FLEENSTONES!" lines were both snippets from the aforementioned stream.
