Haha, i'm gonna getcha!

—Fred's only ever spoken line, SMG4 Movie: REVELATIONS

Fred was the main character of Mage, the avatar of SMG0 and Niles, and one of the two posthumous overarching protagonists (with Spudnick) of the SMG4 series. His only appearance in the series was during the SMG4 Movie: REVELATIONS, in a flashback where SMG0 explained to SMG3, SMG4 and Mario the truth about what happened to his universe.

As with his fellow avatar Spudnick, very little was known about Fred's personality other than the fact that he, SMG0 and later Niles would spend every day simply playing with fireballs and magic shields along with the memes of their universe, until he was accidentally struck down by Niles when he was trying to use the God Box's power to "perfect" their world.

During the final moments of the God Box, after SMG0 convinced Niles to stop what he was doing and to let go of his insane thoughts of the "perfect universe", the latter broke down upon realizing his efforts were all in vain and that they were meant to be together in their new universe together. However, SMG0 reassured Niles that just being together was enough. He then urged Niles to follow him and upon realizing that his avatar was waiting for him after all this time, Niles was finally freed from the God Box's corruptive influence and went with his partner to find Fred again and be reunited.

Appearance[]

Before his identity was revealed, Fred first appeared as a cameo in the SMG4 Movie: 10 Year Anniversary Special as a texture less stick figure laying on the ground when Eldritch SMG0 (Niles) shows Mario a flashback of how he destroyed SMG0's universe.

During SMG0's backstory, Fred's true identity and appearance were revealed. He was a tall, one-eyed humanoid with red skin, three fingers on each hand and long legs that ended in stubs. He wore a red bandana tied around his neck and a matching red baseball cap with white highlights and a black "F" in the center.

History[]

Backstory[]

Many years before the events of the first episode, Fred was the main character of an old 1982 computer game called Mage where he lived with his only friend and guardian, SMG0. The two would always play in their small, peaceful universe along with the memes who inhabited it.

However, one day the memes started to corrupt due to being in the living realm for too long. So while Fred dealt with the corrupted memes, SMG0 uses his Guardian Pod to travel to the God Box, and it creates an artificial Super Meme Guardian named Niles, who would create a solution to fix the problem by creating the Internet Graveyard. But despite the peace and the presence of a newly created friend, Niles became corrupted due to his natural connection to the God Box and asks his creator how to fix himself, to which he believes that due to being different from Fred and SMG0, Niles must make himself "perfect" and asks the God Box for the power to do so.

The God Box grants his wish but only further corrupts Niles who, blinded by this new power, opens a rift to his universe and accidentally kills Fred with this new power, shocking him and breaking SMG0's heart. Afterwards, while Fred's corpse lay within his decaying universe, Niles took advantage of SMG0's grief of his avatar's demise to fuse/possess him and become Eldritch SMG0 and begin his journey to create a "perfect universe" for himself and SMG0 with their new avatar.

Post-death[]

In SMG4 Movie: 10 Year Anniversary Special, Fred's decayed corpse lays in his decaying universe when Eldritch SMG0 shows Mario a flashback of how he destroyed the universes of SMG0, SMG1 and SMG2.

In SMG4: The Final Piece, Niles, while possessing Axol in his new form of Eldritch Ax0l, indirectly mentions having an avatar of his own again, Mario, after the death of SMG0's avatar Fred.

Abilities[]

As explained by SMG1, an avatar is a seemingly normal person but with extraordinary abilities. As the avatar of his universe, Fred is assumed to have the same basic powers as Spudnick and Mario:

  • Universe Sustenance: As the avatar of his universe, Fred was what gave his universe its form and what kept it together. If he were to die, then the entire universe would become corrupted and collapse.
  • Guardian's Form: Fred's meme guardian, SMG0, gets his form based off of Fred with the sole difference being that he is blue. Unlike the other Super Meme Guardians, SMG0 wasn't a modded recolor of his avatar but instead the opposing player in Mage who would fight against Fred, therefore Fred's death wouldn't affect SMG0.
  • Wizard-like powers: As part of their game, Fred is capable of firing fireballs out of his hands and summoning shields to block.

Trivia[]

  • His voice actor, Michael Kovich, also voices Fred's meme guardians, SMG0 and Niles.
  • Fred's color scheme is pure red, like his fellow avatars Spudnick and Mario.
  • Fred is the ninth character who’s death was taken seriously, after Clone Mario, Desti, Francis, Greg The Alien, Spudnick, Auri Bori, Axol and the Box Club Leader.
  • Fred only has one line in the entire series that was directed to SMG0: "Haha, I'm gonna getcha!".
  • Like Spudnick, he has not made many appearances in the SMG4 series, only appearing briefly in the SMG4 Movie: 10 Year Anniversary Special and the officially in the SMG4: Movie REVELATIONS through SMG0's flashback.
  • Due to SMG0 not having originated from his Guardian Pod, Fred may have been the only avatar not have been stupified by their meme-generating effects.
  • It is unknown if Fred had an accent, since Spudnick spoke with a Southern accent and Mario speaks with a Italian accent. However, his voice actor has a different tone for him and his guardians, with Fred sounding very goofy, Niles sounding like a stereotypical bad boy and similarly to Jax from The Amazing Digital Circus, while SMG0 sounds like a neutral ground between the two and very similar to N from Murder Drones.
  • Fred's name could be a reference to his color scheme being nearly all red, as it's the color associated with an avatar. Unlike Mario who only has red clothes and Spudnick who only has red skin, Fred has both red skin and red clothes, being his bandana and baseball cap.
