How I Make My Videos is the sixth episode of the Dumb Stories to Chill and Relax to series and the five hundred and seventy-first episode to be uploaded by SMG4.
Synopsis[]
“ |
Now you too can make crappy videos like me |
” | —, Luke Lerdwichagul |
Plot[]
Luke asks you if you enjoy watching SMG4, if you want to do something similar as your YouTube career, and if you want to willingly trap yourself within a bottomless pit on entertainment-starved fans constantly demanding weekly creativity and judging your every move, knowing full well that even the slightest wrong move could cost you your channel and your only reason to live. Luke says this video is the place to learn how to do that.
To start, Luke says that making videos is fun and challenging, and that he is glad he gets to share to the viewers how to make them. He says that there are many parts to making SMG4 videos like he does.
- Step 1: What's your idea
Luke says that if you're a YouTuber on the rise, you're probably overconfident and think you're ready to meme it up on the internet. But what's actually important is coming up with a good idea. You could actually spend time coming up with a completely original idea, or you could just make a meme out of a preexisting thing. You could also base it on a popular game, like what he did for FNAF and Baldi, or parody a movie, which he has done rather extensively, to the point where he shouts to Kevin Lerdwichagul, saying they made too many movie parodies. He then admits that coming up with ideas is pretty hard, also saying that Kevin and him even struggle coming up with basic stories. He then shows how most of his and Kevin's conversations go: the two of them sitting at a table, shouting nouns. He then says that a lot of ideas were spawned because of this conversation method. He then goes into a flashback, saying that his editor, James Bailey, suggested the idea of Mario gets his dick stuck in a door, which got the approval of Luke and Kevin, which then spawned the idea for the video SMG4: Mario Gets His PINGAS Stuck In The Door. For the purposes of this video, Luke decides to make "Mario gets his ass slapped".
- Step 2: Write dat script
Luke begins by saying now that you have your idea, you need to write down what happens in the video, or else your actors will get confused. While scripting is crucial, it's also a pain in the ass. Pulling stuff out of your ass with nothing to go off of is very challenging, referencing a time back in his High School English classes, where he had to write a comprehensive essay on the emotions conveyed in the Shakespearean Play "Macbeth," when he could barely get started. He then says that is why Kevin helps him write, or else he would be doomed. He then shows "real" footage of him writing a script, suffering from an idea block. He then admits that for his early videos, he didn't use a script, and he just winged his videos with no idea what he was doing, such as Super Mario 64 Bloopers: Toad Gold. He then says since the videos were unscripted, his endings would often be unplanned and nonsensical. He then says that not writing a script doesn't work nowadays with multiple people helping him. He then says that you can write how you are comfortable with, be it in chunks, or while listening to death metal. Luke then says that to write jokes, he thinks of a funny sound effect he knows, and then make up a scenario that builds up to that sound effect. An example being the "Damn boi he thicc" sound in SMG4: Mario's Big Chungus Hunt. He then says in order to do this step correctly, you need to be able to set your limits, because you may have only a certain time to be able to do something, he then demonstrates how things can be different depending on how much time you put in, showing the major contrast between War Of The Fat Italians 2018 - Official Trailer and the actual SMG4: War Of The Fat Italians 2018. He then says to just make your own meme if you can't think of anything. He says that you should grab the closest thing near you, say the word and add maximum echo/reverb to your voice, and add spaces between the letters. This step ends with the meme he created, which is just the word C H A I R with maximum echo and reverb.
- Step 3: Getting your programs
In this step, Luke explains that you need to get the right programs you need to make the actual video. First off, he says that he uses the N64 emulator PJ64 to play the game Super Mario 64, then saying that you need to make sure you own the game first for legal reasons. He says that he loved to play the crap out of SM64 before his YouTube channel sucked all of the life out of it. He says that not only can you play Super Mario 64, but you can also use cheat codes to make the game all crazy, like Mario with no head, or him naked. Luke says that with this emulator, you can make Mario do all sorts of things, which had helped Luke in making Mario do things he didn't know were possible, like making him have no pants. He then shares a factoid, that Mario's spazzing out animation is the result of him breaking the game by booting up Majora's Mask, loading an SM64 save file, and then spazzing. He also shares another factoid by saying that the color code for SMG4 had no thought put into it, saying that there is a program that lets you change the color of Mario's outfit, so he just picked blue and white and called it a day. He also clears up the fact that he didn't just steal the color code from Stanley, a character from Donkey Kong 3, as he appeared in a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee. He also says that the same color code appeared on a TV show back in the '90s. He then says that he loves using the emulator in weird but innovative ways, sharing that this is the reason that he uses Mario Party 3's debug menu to do Wario and Waluigi animations, and why he uses Goldeneye 007 to originally record Swagmaster6969696969 and Chris Gordman. He then says that he definitely owns all of the games he mentioned for legal reasons. He moved on by saying that you're gonna need a recording program, saying that he uses the ancient recording program FRAPS. He also mentions to never use Hypercam, referencing how people use it with its watermark in the corner of the screen. Then he says that you're gonna need Garry's Mod, which is a sandbox engine that he has put in over 17k hours of time into, which he will never get back. Lastly, he says that you will need an editing program to glue your videos together. He jokes about Windows Movie Maker being pretty good, and Nickelodeon Toon Twister 3-D looking pretty professional. He then says that he uses VEGAS Pro, and that he definitely had $430 at age 13 and bought it legitimately and loved it.
- Step 4: Recording Footage
He now says that is is time to start the real magic and record Mario doing some pretty illegal things. He then says that unlike every other studio that plans their shots properly, we're gonna wing it. Luke says that his approach is to focus really hard and visualize every single shot that will happen in his head. He then says the Mario 64 Machinima experience is 90% Mario punching the air and sucking his own penis as he talks to imaginary people. Alongside that, he says he also uses tools that allow you to play animations on command. He says to imagine him working on his computer, and replace the computer with Luke banging two dolls together, which he says that is pretty much how GMod works. He says all you need to do is give ragdolls nightmare-fueled faces and start chucking them around and hope they do something funny. He then says that the art of puppeteering characters is actually pretty difficult, saying that you need patience because GMod is an old game (Coming out on December 24, 2004), and it is prone to crashing and poor optimization. He says that overall, you can do almost anything thanks to the amazing community, saying that you can get models and maps of anything. He then goes to share some of his personal old stories of playing this game when he was younger. He says that he used to be scared of loading any map because some maps had jumpscares added inside of them, which he thinks might have added to his trauma of being scared to almost anything. He says that even if he would spawn a zombie in the map, and he forgot to delete it, and then he lost where it was, he would just quit. He also says that in his spare time he would go on torture maps where you just throw ragdolls inside grinders and stuff because he was bored. His defense for this being weird is that he does not want to go online and talk to people. He then admits that he has never done a full scene of SMG4 with another person on the same map. He says he imagines that doing a scene with another person on Gmod will go like this, with him showing a clip of a Minecraft house getting almost fully deleted. He then apologizes for his tangent because he spent so much time playing GMod that it isn't funny. He ends with talking about adding funny images or really epic green screens for your videos. He says that back in the day he couldn't really achieved super detailed scenes, meaning that if he wanted an epic fight scene, he would have to use images only, which he says was a pain in the ass to do. Although on the bright side, this is the way he found the Rocks and Old Man Hobo. He then records some footage for the amazing script that we made together earlier.
- Step 5: Editing
Now he says that it looks like you've done all the hard work, and now it is just hopelessly gluing things together in the hopes of making something funny. He now gives an explanation of what editing is for people who haven't edited before: a clip of someone getting their flesh burned off. He says SMG4 requires really quick and easy editing so you need to do it really fast. He then refers back to the old editing he did where he left black bars in the video from Super Mario 64 and thinking no one would notice. He then says that back in 2012, he could record 7 minutes of footage in half a day, to the point where he could do two videos in a weekend. He says that because this was back in 2012, most of the footage was just gameplay and not much audio. He says that now he can barely make 2 minutes a day with the amount of crap he does. He also says that he barely misses an upload of SMG4 unless it was school-related because he felt that if he missed an upload, the audience would hate him. He says that he had a problem with even the slightest thought of someone hating him, referencing his very first hate comment, which was something like "this video was s***". He said that this comment made him so sad that he couldn't edit for the rest of the day. He now goes into saying that Kevin hates editing because he finds it too hard. Finally, he says that he finds editing pretty chill and relaxing as he edits the video we've been working on together, Mario Gets His Ass Slapped.
- Step 6: Adding sound
Last but not least, it is time to add sound, which Luke says is very important to SMG4, and where the soul of it comes in. He says that this part depends on what memes you know and where to use it. He then admits that he has a pool of thousands of sounds on his PC where he just mixes and matches sounds together to create "beautiful music." At the end, he says that many people on Youtube have created different SMG4 sound effect libraries, and that he is glad that he could make this style of editing more prominent on Youtube.
- Ending
Luke ends it off by saying that's how SMG4 videos are made. He admits that this video wasn't as much of a tutorial as of just him sharing his stories and experience of him doing these steps. He says he is glad that he could share his experience with the audience because he has been doing it every week for the past 9 years. He then shows the masterpiece that we've made during the video, which is of "Mario gets his ass slapped". Mario walks down the castle, humming. A shocked SMG4 sees him and slaps his ass, causing Mario to scream. After the clip, he says that was something, and thanks the audience for watching.
