Official artwork of the Inklings from Splatoon

Inklings are the main protagonists of the hit Wii U game, Splatoon, and its sequel on the Switch, Splatoon 2. They also appear in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

In SMG4's videos, they first appear in ♫ The Ultimate Smash Bros ♫ as a cameo. The Inklings later had a major role in SMG4: If Mario Was In... Splatoon. A large amount of the indigenous Inkling species seems to reside in a city appropriately named Inkopolis. In the Splatoon Universe, their main rivals are the Octolings.

During the second part of the Anime Arc, thousands of Inklings have been abducted by Francis to extract their ink so he can power up the Inkweaver to the max and have his very own "Waifu Island". In Francis' hideout on the Anime Island, numerous Inklings are seen floating in cylinders filled with a mysterious red liquid unconscious. However, they are all safely rescued by Shaggy Rogers. It is shown at the end of the arc that Inklings become human when completely drained of their ink, as demonstrated by Meggy. Whether or not this effect can be undone remains unknown.

They are humanoid beings with characteristics of a cephalopod species. They have they ability to dissolve into a small squid when swimming in ink. Inklings are half kid and half squid. The male has a ponytail on his head, and the female has long, flowing tentacles and a fringe. They also have pointy ears. A majority of Inklings living in Inkopolis speak in a language which is incapable for others to understand, which is called Inklish. However, some Inklings can also speak English, like Meggy, Marie and Callie, to an extent that Mushroom Kingdom citizens are able to understand them.

Notable Members

One notable member of the Inkling species is a former Inkling girl named Meggy, who is one of the main side characters in SMG4’s videos.
