Inkopolis is a major city in the region of Inkadia[1] and the main setting of the Splatoon series. It is the primary home of the Inkling race. It can be accessed through a manhole located in the basement of Peach's Castle. In addition to Meggy, it is also Axol's hometown.

Mario ends up here while chasing Meggy in SMG4: If Mario Was In... Splatoon and serves as the main setting of that blooper as well as If Mario Was In... Splatoon 2 and the film SMG4 Movie: Meggy's Destiny.

History[]

Inkopolis residents, including Meggy, absolutely despise anime. At some point Axol was born in Inkopolis and began to have a talent for anime, but was driven away due to the town's hatred of it.

In 2017, Mario accidentally arrives and meets Meggy and finally joins her team to make her win the competition but loses against The Ink Brigade.

In 2018, Mario and Meggy trained again for the next competition but engaged a fight with Desti who wanted to recruit Mario (but failed because she kept getting Mario's name wrong).

4 months later, some Inklings were possibly infected by T-Pose Virus during the Second T-Pose Outbreak by Waluigi via his Staff of Rejection, but remains unconfirmed.

In 2019, it served as the training grounds for Mario, Luigi and Tari in SMG4: Meggy's Bootcamp, where Meggy gave them intense training for the upcoming Splatfest. Their victory is cut short when Desti stole their weapons, and had to get it back in the next episode.

A week later, during the Splatfest incident, Inklings started to disappear around the city due to the anime characters created by Francis who abducted them. As a result, the whole city was placed under wide lockdown to prevent further incidents.

After the event of the island, all inklings were saved by Shaggy.

In 2020, due to Meggy being a human and no longer an Inkling, Meggy has no choice but to leave her hometown to stay in the Mushroom Kingdom after the final Splatfest.

A few months after this however, the discriminatory law against humans has seemingly been lifted such as when Mario and Meggy were shown back in the city during the events of SMG4: Cooking with Mario & Bowser: World Tour.

Later during the Revelations Arc after Niles had reached the God Box, meteorites began raining down on the world with Inkopolis among the places being affected. Because of this, SMG4's Gang started to evacuate the citizens of the world in SMG4 Movie: REVELATIONS with Meggy returning to Inkopolis to evacuate the Octoposse along with the other Inkling and Octoling residents to a bunker.

During The Lawsuit Arc, Shigeru Miyamoto was filming the Inklings fighting against Mario for an upcoming Mario and Splatoon crossover game. After filming ended, Mario was found by Meggy and SMG4 who used temporary IP change contracts to get through the firewall with Meggy reverting back to her old inkling form because of it. However, Mario didn't recognize them due to the firewall erasing his memories of his friends. Because of this, Meggy and SMG4 tried to jog Mario's memory by re-enacting how he and Meggy first met. When their attempt doesn't seem to work and they almost give up however, Mario takes a look at SMG4's phone and reacts to the memes he sees on it which brings back his memories after SMG4 shows him more.

Due to detecting Illegal memes however, the Inkling Police Department located them and captured SMG4 while forcing Mario and Meggy to go through them to get him back. After they rescue him however, the temporary IP change contracts SMG4 and Meggy used wear off and they are located by the police force again. However, they managed to escape them and took a brainwashed Luigi with them as Lawyer Kong looked at them from behind.

Areas[]

Inkopolis Plaza[]

SMG4 If Mario Was In..

The Inkopolis Tower, the landmark of the plaza.

The heart of Inkopolis, and also the hub of the first game. Many shops are set up in the area, including the Squid Sisters' studio. It also includes the large Inkopolis Tower, where Inklings head inside into the Battle Lobby to play in Turf War matches. The Inkopolis Plaza subway station is just south of the main plaza, and Meggy's Apartment is located further south.

Inkopolis square[]

Inkopolis Square is the hub of the second game. Like the plaza, it has various shops and Off the Hook's studio.

Infrastructure[]

Law enforcement[]

The Inkopolis Police Department is the law enforcement agency that serves the Greater Inkopolis metropolitan area. They are seen in SMG4: If Mario Was In... Splatoon 3, trying to catch Mario, Meggy and SMG4 for trespassing the area within the Firewall, trafficking memes, and kidnapping Mario, but failed.

Transport[]

Citizens of Inkopolis can get around the city at ease with two types of rapid transit systems. The first, a commuter train system connecting the suburbs and the Deepsea Metro, connecting the major areas of the city with 10 lines. Inkopolis Plaza subway station is an interchange with these two lines. According to Splatoon's game designer Shintaro Sato, Inkopolis Plaza and Inkopolis Square are connected by subway, about 1.2 kilometers/0.7 miles between the two stations, comparing the distances similar to that of Shibuya and Harajuku stations in Tokyo.[2]

Although unseen, Inkopolis has intercity rail connections to the city of Splatsville in the Splatlands region, connected via the Hammerhead Bridge that had finished construction by the time of the events of Splatoon 3. The distance is 1 hour and 34 minutes from each other, with Sato even comparing the distance to that of Tokyo to Atami, Shizuoka. Inkopolis is also connected to Splatsville via highway, with the time taken in between being that of driving between Los Angeles and Las Vegas at around 4 hours and 15 minutes.[2]

Trivia[]

  • Though Inkopolis is Meggy’s home, it does not appear often in the SMG4 series. Its most notable appearance was in Meggy's debut episode.
  • In Splatoon, Inkopolis takes place approximately 12,000 years in the future after excessive flooding of the planet Earth has occurred.. In SMG4's universe, it takes place in the present and is located close to the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • Inkopolis can be accessed via a pipe inside of Peach's Castle.
    • However, in recent years the city is starting to become more accessible, such as in SMG4: The Mario Showdown, where the cast was able to get there via Axol's drawings of Pokémon, and recently, hailing a yellow taxi to get there in SMG4: Super Mario Taxi, showing some evidence that there is a probably a link from the Mushroom Kingdom and Inkopolis physically on the surface. However, it is unknown if Mario had to cross a certain border to get there, hinting some evidence that Inkopolis is a separate country from the Mushroom Kingdom.
    • As mentioned by Meggy in SMG4: A Day In The Life Of Everyone, Inkopolis has its own police force, called the Inkopolis Police, and have their own jurisdiction of the city rather than the Royal Mushroom Kingdom Police.
