The SMG4 Crew, also known as the SMG4 Cast, the SMG4 Gang and the Glitchy Gang, is the main protagonistic faction of the SMG4 series.

Originally consisting of SMG4's interpretation of the "YouTube Rangers" and characters from the Super Mario franchise (such as Mario, Luigi, Bowser, and Toad), he later developed his own original characters to add, such as Fishy Boopkins, Bob Bobowski, Meggy Spletzer, Saiko Bichitaru, Tari, Melony Melone, and even his former archrival, SMG3.

Characters like Swagmaster69 and Chris Gordman were originally occasional enemies before becoming allies to the crew and helping them during major events. Desti was also an archrival turned ally before her death and Axol, who started out as an ally turned prominent member before sacrificing himself to save the gang. This even includes short-lived allies who saved them in times of need, such as Terrance and SMG0 who both gave their lives to save SMG3, SMG4, Mario and Melony from Niles' psychotic rampage during the God Box's destruction.

Following the group's conception, they've been involved in hilarious, scary, or random misadventures and shenanigans. However, ever since 2018, they've also been involved in dramatic and emotional adventures that span across eight story arcs/sagas and six movies.

Primary Members

Those who are currently part of the gang and are considered to be it’s most prominent members.

  • SMG4 - The creator of the videos and group, and one of the two main protagonists of the series. He is a Super Meme Guardian and a former Mario Recolor who originally resided in Peach's Castle, often making his bloopers (or playing Minecraft), and gets generally annoyed by Mario (who is apparently his assistant). Following Peach's Castle destruction in a rampage, He had build a new one for himself. Alongside Mario, he is the co-leader of the group.
  • Mario - The main protagonist of the Mario franchise and the mascot of Nintendo, he serves as one of the two main protagonists of the series as it's universe's Avatar. He is obsessed with spaghetti and incredibly asinine due to the effects of SMG4's Guardian Pod striking him with meme energy. Most episodes revolve around him and the trouble that he gets the main cast and himself into. Alongside SMG4, he is the co-leader of the group.
  • Luigi - Mario's fraternal younger twin brother. He makes smarter decisions than Mario, but he's still as cowardly as he is in the actual games, if not more so. He currently runs his own Flower Shop and is known for his expertise in meditation, while having a strong liking for young, ripped men.
  • Fishy Boopkins - A former "Spike" who is a huge otaku fan due to his obsession with attractive anime female characters and who owns many Dakimakura pillows. He first appeared in the Seaside Stupidity two-parter episode, where he saved SMG4 and his friends from drowning in the ocean after their cruise ship was wrecked.
  • Bob Bobowski - A oft-homeless former "Garo" who speaks in a text-to-speech voice. Mario and Luigi first met him in the sewers of Ganondorf's castle in SM64 Bloopers: Can Ganondorf come out to play?. He's obsessed with fame, money, and getting the most screen-time in his appearances. He was originally used as a humorous punching bag of a character, but later served as the selfish main antagonist of The Rapper Bob Arc. He has since redeemed himself and has reconciled with Mario and the gang.
  • Saiko Bichitaru - A beautiful but initially psychotic love interest from Kevin's School. Boopkins brought her into real-life one Valentine's Day with Kamek's wand in order to have a real girlfriend, but due to her being mentally unstable and craving attention as a result of prolonged rejection, their relationship ended in tragedy. She has since redeemed herself with help from Luigi and become close friends with the gang, though she remains a sociopath to most others. She is an expert guitarist and has developed an obsession with KFC's chicken, and she also possesses a giant hammer.
  • Tari - A shy, accident-prone, blue-haired cyborg gamer girl who is obsessed with ducks and lives in an apartment in Onett. She loves video games and is extremely good at them, but outside of them, she hates violence and attempts to avoid it, preferring friendship. Her meta runner arm is now a sentient being named Clench.
  • Melony Melone - Formerly a sentient watermelon and Anti-Cast member who served as Meggy's doppelganger for SMG3 in The YouTube Arc, she transformed into a human girl after a Fierce Deity Mask was accidentally thrown onto her. She is lazy and spends lots of time sleeping, but is able to create a powerful sword at will upon using the power of her mask. She is also a skilled hacker. She was the former best friend/love interest of the late Axol. She was the first member of the Anti-Cast to become an prominent member of the main cast, the second being her former boss, SMG3.

Trivia

  • By Season 11, only Mario, SMG4, Luigi and Bowser (sometimes) would remain as the initial members of the gang who have been present since the beginning. Peach Toadstool and Toad would all eventually be retired from the group at some point or another due to the series shifting its focus onto original characters like Meggy.
  • Before Season 8, SMG4's main cast consisted of mainly Super Mario or Nintendo characters besides SMG4 but SMG4 was a Mario Recolor . By Season 10, the majority of them have been replaced mainly with female, anime-esque characters such as Saiko Bichitaru, Tari, Meggy Spletzer, and Melony.
    • As of Season 10, Fishy Boopkins, Bob Bobowski, and Tari are the most frequent members aside from Mario, Luigi, and SMG4 to appear in Season 10.
    • Many SM64 Machinimist characters like MarioMario54321, MCGustavo, AustinDawgyDawg, GageDawg, Crimsonman5, and Pinkolol16, are absent in recent seasons, even in minor cameo appearances.
    • Swagmaster and Chris became more prominent recurring characters outside their own series since it eventually merged with the main SMG4 series in 2019 and often times allied with the gang before eventually becoming friends to the gang.
    • After The Anime Arc Toad became less a prominent character of SMG4’s cast due to his absence in The Anime Arc and Shroomy was his de-facto replacement at the time.
  • Comparisons can be made between them and any team of protagonists, albeit as of late, comparisons to both DC Comics' Justice League and Marvel Comics Avengers have been more prevalent, especially with memes involving Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame throughout 2018 and 2019.
  • Mario and Luigi are the only members of the gang to not have voice acting majorly a lot.
    • However, Luigi is the ONLY one to not speak in full sentences with audio, since sometimes Mario uses voice clips to talk on some occasions.
  • After SMG4: War Of The Fat Italians 2022, and onwards, Mario and Luigi are the only Nintendo characters of the group that have not undergo any original design changes, following Fishy Boopkins and Bob Bobowski redesigned into original non-IP characters.
    • Mario and Luigi most likely kept their original designs in order to keep bringing in viewership due to their recognizability and popularity.
    • Funnily enough, the original Mario was originally created as a replacement of Popeye, as the Donkey Kong arcade game was originally meant to be a game about Popeye, but Nintendo couldn't because the company owning Popeye didn't allowed them to, making Mario a sort of redesign for Popeye.
    • Shroomy is also the only original character who does not come from any preexisting franchise, nor to go through any redesign, due to Luke and Kevin not considering him worth the effort due to being a side character.

Notes

  1. Since the gang is a group of friends, it doesn't have any official leader. However, SMG4 and Mario are considered to be the leaders because they are the founders of the group and SMG4 is shown as the face of the crews, as well as him often taking charge in serious situations.
