Synopsis[]
Mario's BALLIN'
Plot[]
SMG4 and SMG3 gathered the gang at the Omnia Academy gymnasium to play basketball because SMG4 wanted to show that SMG3 "ain't ballin'". Seeing this being ridiculous, Meggy wanted to leave, however when she was shocked that SMG4 did not pick her for his team, instead choosing Mario, Melony and Bob, she angrily asked him why, to which SMG4 replied that she is too short to be on his team. Out of spite, Meggy joined SMG3's team to prove that she is the best, playing alongside him, Boopkins and Luigi.
The game starts, and both teams managed to get a good head start with both teams scoring a goal each, despite Melony sleeping and Luigi, much to the surprise of SMG3 refused to play out of panic. However, as the game progressed, both teams began to cheat, starting with Boopkins swallowing the ball in an attempt to score a goal without the other team knowing, but was halted when Bob noticed him and popped him using his blade hands, causing him to deflate and fly around. Meggy even used her Splattershot gun to stop the ball shot by Mario from going into the hoop, with Mario retaliating with light machine guns, shooting at Meggy and SMG3. SMG3 then tweeted to SMG4 to distract SMG4 writing a tweet about him, giving him enough time to score a goal. With SMG3 leading the game by 3 points compared to SMG4 with only 1, and everyone except Melony and Luigi fighting each other, SMG3 decided to bring his friends and the basketball hoop flying towards space with a jetpack strapped to the hoop.
Noticing what they were doing, SMG4 and his team called in Toast Guy, who turned into Hulk, to launch them towards space to catch up, eventually the hoops landed on the Moon. The game continued, although the inexistence of gravity made the game even harder to play, with Meggy floating in space struggling to come down, and Mario kicking Boopkins into a black hole, and SMG3 throwing boulders at Mario to get the ball, SMG4 decided to call Michael Jordan to block the hoop to prevent SMG3 from scoring. SMG3, to get the basketballer out of the hoop, insulted him by claiming that Space Jam 2 was better than the first Space Jam, causing him to drill inside the Moon. The Moon turned into the Angry Moon and began its rapid descent towards the Earth, with everyone on, crashing into the gymnasium and exploding upon impact.
Amidst a destroyed Omnia Academy, both SMG4 and SMG3 accused each other of cheating, but when Melony woke up to find her bed burnt to destruction, she grew angry and unleashed her Fierce Deity powers. When Meggy attempted to fight back, her punch had no effect on Melony, and she began scoring until 20 points. With SMG3's team at a disadvantage, SMG3 tried to ask Luigi for help, but Luigi had pledged to not go back to the life of street basketball that he used to be, but upon looking at Melony with the ball, Luigi had no other choice but to unleash his street basketball persona, becoming buff. He took the ball from Melony with telekinesis, and walked towards the hoop. Melony attempted to stop Luigi by swinging her sword at him, but Luigi dodged her move, and pushed her away. With the other teams trying to help, Melony and Luigi eventually were left to face each other off. In one last attempt to stop Luigi, Melony shot her sword beam, but Luigi dodged and scored in a hoop that send shockwaves to the other teammates.
The game ended when the shockwave caused Melony to go back to sleep and knocked everyone else, and a victory for SMG3 with infinite points against SMG4's 20 points. SMG4, shocked at his loss, claimed that he is not "ballin'", and Mario, meanwhile, was shocked to see that his brother, Luigi, is "ballin'".

Errors[]

- When the first point is given to SMG3, it shows that on the scoreboard, SMG3's team is on the left side of the scoreboard, but later on in the episode, it shows that SMG3's team is on the right side of the scoreboard.
Trivia[]
- The word "ballin" mentioned a number of times in the episode means playing basketball in African American Vernacular English. This is notably explicitly referenced at the end of the episode when Mario was shocked to see a buff Luigi after unleashing his street basketball persona.
- This episode marks the first appearances of:
- Toast Guy since SMG4: The Floor is Lava.
- Angry Moon since Mario Reacts To Anime Memes.
- This is the first canon presence of SMG3, Fishy Boopkins, and Bob Bobowski's redesigns post-War of the Fat Italians 2022.
- This is the third episode that Paul Stylianou wasn't apart of editing, first possibly being SMG4: Clown Fever.
- When Luigi initially fails to play the game, SMG3 is represented by the “sad Mario” meme. This marks the first time in the redesign era to represent SMG4 or SMG3 as Mario-like they were pre-WOTFI 2022.
- This is the first time (Not counting WOTFI challenges), that SMG3 has ever beaten SMG4 at a challenge.
- Some archived voice clips of Meggy while voiced by Lizzie Freeman are heard in this episode.
- On November 24, 2022, SMG4 uploaded a behind the scenes clip onto his social media, provided by Cloud64.
- The episode might be based on a community post made hours after the release of SMG4: Clown Fever, showing Mario, SMG4, SMG3, X and FM playing basketball with the caption "SMG4 Ballin".
[1] Supporting this is the similarities between the community post and the thumbnail, with Mario doing the same pose and expression.
- Colin Rodgers considers this to be his favorite episode wrote, as he mentions him putting all of his effort onto the episode, as he used many technical basketball jargons while he wrote the choreography, resulting him in the nickname of "Ballin' Rodgers".
- The moon section was originally a Rainbow Road section, but later Colin and Kevin felt that kart racing would get in the way of basketball.
- There was originally a whole backstory for the Ghetto Baller Mode Luigi, which involved Luigi being so good at basketball, he "broke the ankles" that anyone he played against. This resulted in Luigi being traumatized by his own greatness and subconsciously locked away his abilities since he never faced a worthy opportunity. This was cut out likely due to runtime issues, with the only instance of this idea being used was Luigi mentioning that he promised to leave that life behind him and a brief mindset of Luigi showing stock footage of real basketball players.
Music Used[]
- 4:03 - ARMS Grand Prix Official Theme Song - Smash Ultimate OST
- 7:75 - Let's Beyblade (feat. Lucas Rossi) (Season 1)
- 8:46 - The Henry Stickmin Collection OST: Bizarre Funk
- 10:53 - Splatune OST - Splattack!
- 11:45 - Official Goku Drip Theme - Ultra Dripstinct
- 12:13 - Boku No Hero Academia: United States Of Smash
References[]
- Space Jam and Space Jam: A New Legacy: This episode is an obvious parody to this 1996 live-action/animated sports film directed by Joe Pytka and starring Michael Jordan and its 2021 standalone sequel directed by Malcolm D. Lee and starring LeBron James and both distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. SMG3 even mentioning the 2 movies by name, as well as Michael Jordan appearing during the episode.
- The episode is also an obvious reference to Mario Hoops 3-on-3 and the basketball segment seen in Mario Sports Mix.
- References to both The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and Club Penguin can be seen with SMG4, Mario and Bob performing their victory dances upon making the second score.
- Dragon Ball Super: The scene with Luigi sliding on the ball along Melony's sword beam to beat her is a reference to the anime and manga's Universe Survival Arc where Goku slides on a Kamehameha along a beam attack used by his foe Kefla to defeat her.
