SMG4 CREW, formerly known as Mario Does Things, Mario Plays or Mario Reacts, was a spin-off series of SMG4 that ran from 2021 to 2024, where Mario (and sometimes also one of his friends) is doing things. Starting from mid-2023, the name "SMG4 CREW" points out to videos described below.
History[]
When it first released, it primarily involved Mario playing popular video games on his computer, with Mario often failing/losing at these games and consequently raging. However, on October 20, 2021 with the release of Mario Reacts to Spooky Memes but Dies half way through (despite the fact that this video was primarily focused on promoting Murder Drones), the series' focus was turned to Mario, and occasionally one of his friends, reacting to popular memes, similar to SMG4's former spin-off gaming turned meme reacting channel, Hobo Bros (which has been on hiatus for over 4 years now). On November 17, 2021, the series further expanded its general scope of content by having Mario and friends do other things besides playing games and reacting to memes, such as the friends having fun on Discord. On December 22, 2021, Mario and friends also began to react to things other than memes, such as commercials, "life hacks" and even "funny" Tik Toks.
The series took a short hiatus whilst the SMG4 Castle was still being built, and in SMG4: THE NEW CASTLE!! the series was eventually revived.
In July 2023, the series, then titled Mario Does Things, was renamed to SMG4 CREW. This rebrand, coinciding with the main SMG4 brand "refresh", was announced at the start of SMG4: THE NEW CASTLE!!, and was put into effect with Mario Reacts To Nintendo Memes 14 ft. SMG4. Starting with this rebrand, the series would also be given its own mascot, Beeg SMG4, who appears in the logo, intro and outro sequences. The series would also regain a dedicated intro and logo, something not done since the Mario plays branding. (albeit sparingly) This included two alternate intros that were cycled between: one with the gang playing Monopoly, and the other featuring the crew being hit by Beeg SMG4 like a car. The name was presumably because they're planning to make similar videos without Mario, though in all episodes under the new name, Mario was still involved.
In 2024, the frequency of releases reduced drastically, likely to allow more focus to be put on the weekly uploads from the main series. From March to August 2024, the series went on hiatus due to PUZZLEVISION. Despite a short comeback on 24th August 2024, the series has likely been discontinued as of the said date, seemingly suffering a similar fate to R64 and GnR as it seems to have merged with the main series, and the SMG4 CREW brand has stopped being used. There were a total of 58 episodes in the series.
Unlike the main series which releases a new episode every Saturday, episodes in this series were released every other Wednesday. (though exceptions were sometimes made.) The episodes were originally uploaded at 6:00 AM EST (3:00 AM PST), though later the upload date was changed to 3:00 PM EST (12:00 PM PST), likely so more people were awake at the time of release.

- The Mario Plays series is very similar to and possibly influenced by Weegeepie, a French YouTuber who makes videos of Luigi playing video games. Further evidence of this is seen in the very first episode of the series, Mario Plays: Unfair Mario, where Luigi wants to play games on the computer after SMG4 told him that he could, but Mario keeps stopping him.
- This may also indicate that what happens in Weegeepie episodes is semi-canon.
- The Mario Plays series seems to take place in the same continuity as Meggy's livestreams, since Mario interrupted Meggy during her Deltarune Chapter 2 stream and showed the flashback of what happened when he did that in Mario Plays: Deltarune.
- The Mario Plays videos transitioning into meme reaction videos parallels Hobo Bros' transition from a gaming channel to a meme reaction channel.
- The series is created by Luke Lerdwichagul.
- Videos in the series see a slight increase in SM64 usage, possibly due to Luke editing the videos (which is confirmed in the credits of Mario Tries Life Hacks). As of Mario Reacts To CURSED Nintendo Commercials, Aaron Rogers became the first credited editor; as of Mario Reacts To Nintendo Memes 3, Paul Stylianou started editing; in Mario Reacts To Funny Tik Toks, TheInvertedShadow debuted his style of editing; in Mario Reacts To Nintendo Memes 6 ft. Tari, James Bailey also joins editing occasionally; in Mario Reacts to Nintendo Memes 13, cloud64 makes his only edit in the series before stepping down; and in Mario Does Internet Tutorials, future editor Anaidon debuts.
- Mario Reacts To Nintendo Memes 4 and Mario Reacts To Nintendo Memes 11 ft. Meggy are the only Mario Does Things episodes that aired on a Saturday. This was because of the Glitch Productions team wanting extra time to finish the final episodes of the then ongoing Revelations Arc (SMG4 Movie: REVELATIONS) and Lawsuit Arc (SMG4: War Of The Fat Italians 2022), respectively. Both arc finales would release a week after their respective Nintendo Memes videos.
- Oddly, when "SMG4: If Mario Was In... Disney" was uploaded, it was added to the series playlist accidentally.
- This also marks the returning characters on this series (like Princess Daisy, Rosalina, Dry Bones) and many other Nintendo characters reappearing after being absent in mid-seasons.
- Peach Toadstool also got her appearances increased since Season 11 and Season 12, until in Season 13, due to her being left to rot into her castle by the Demonic Goop, her appearances gained a huge decrease in this series, appearing as her human version and as Demonic version, through in cameos only.
- Akuago220, Greatdictator, zeekrocz117, and cloud64 are the only editors that only edited one series episode.
- Running Gags:
- Throughout these videos, Tari becomes the victim of a crude joke.
- Throughout the videos, Nintendo's recent takedowns of fanmade content in recent years is referenced.
- Many of the videos make jokes using memes of "Among Us", much to Mario's rage due to it becoming annoying for him (and his bitter memory of impostors).
- Mario accidentally jumping to the end credits immediately.
- Mario sometimes getting killed or injured at the end.
- Mario either jumping into whatever he is watching or playing at the time to do something or someone jumping out of Mario's computer and injure and/or kill him.
- In certain episodes in the series, Mario either invites one of his friends to watch with him, forces them, or is forced to include them.
- The official SMG4 CREW playlist excludes four episodes: Mario Plays: Five Nights At Freddy's, Mario Reacts To Meta Runner, Mario Reacts To Funny Tik Toks 2 ft. Luigi and Mario Does Pranks 2.
- The thumbnails of this series seem to have been inspired from the Hobo Bros video Reacting to Cursed Bowser Memes.
- There were instances of videos not being uploaded on expected release dates for varying reasons:
- September 28, 2022, possibly referencing The Lawsuit Arc.
- July 19, 2023, due to The Showgrounds being closed temporarily for construction of the new castle.
- August 30, 2023, Reason is unknown
- January 31, 2024, February 14 to February 28th, Reason is unknown for now
- March 20, 2024, Possibly Referencing the PUZZLEVISION storyline, due to Mr. Puzzles taking over the channel.
- However, starting from March 2024, the series stopped due to focusing on the weekly uploads and possibly due to the Glitchy Drama, and it's unknown when the series will return again. In fact, it returned in August 24, 2024 with Mario Reacts to Illegal Nintendo Memes because the SMG4 team was tired after the celebration party for the finale of Murder Drones.
- The videos Mario Plays VRChat and Fishy Boopkins Plays VRChat can be considered as the precursors of this series as it also consist of a character playing a video game.
- After SMG4 Movie: IT'S GOTTA BE PERFECT, the series returned with episodes on March 29, 2023, April 12, 2023, and April 26, 2023.
- On November 27, 2023, Mario Buys Weird Internet Stuff ft. Bob was taken down due to a copyright claim. It has since been restored by SMG4 on December 4, 2023. This was the first SMG4 CREW video to be taken down by SMG4.
