Season 10 is the tenth season of the SMG4 series, and the first season of the 2020s. This season premiered on January 18, 2020 and concluded on December 26th, 2020 in the Americas, and the following day in Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania.

Synopsis

With the crisis of anime finally over, Meggy sets out to complete Desti’s final task while the crew goes back to their usual stuff with memes. SMG3 on the other hand has finally had it with his nemesis and his friends after countless failures failing time and time again, and plans to begin one final attempt to destroy SMG4 once and for all. Once he gets this done, everyone will finally recognize him as a top YouTuber just as he's always wanted after years of being humiliated as SMG3 plans to make SMG4 and his friends suffer the same way he did. With everything hanging in the balance, Mario must stop SMG3 in his greatest scheme yet before the channel becomes his forever.

Overview

The season started out with SMG4: Mario Gets His PINGAS Stuck In The Door, which is consistently referenced in subsequent videos. The second video, SMG4: Mario School Club, introduced Hal Monitor, a serious police officer who stops anyone from doing "illegal" things. They were followed by SMG4: Bowser Loses Custody Of His Children, where Bowser, with Mario's help, trains to become a better father to Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings, and the long-awaited return of Sonic the Hedgehog in SMG4: If Mario was in The Sonic Movie, as well as SMG4: Mario's Magical TV, which introduced the sentient Soviet water bottle Fuego the Water Bottle. Saiko Bichitaru notably did not appear around this time, excluding archival footage from SMG4: My Mario Academia. Jeeves was also reduced to a background character, often taking some kind of abuse.

SMG4 Movie: Meggy's Destiny was released on February 29. It is the first-ever movie in the SMG4 series and the first by Glitch Productions. It follows Meggy Spletzer finally winning the Splatfest tournament that she was aiming to win since SMG4: If Mario Was In... Splatoon. It also features the final appearance of Desti, who was officially retired as a character, outside of a cameo appearance in SMG4 Movie: WESTERN SPAGHETTI in 2023.

In the springtime, new characters like JubJub Boopkins, the younger brother of Fishy Boopkins, and Rob the Scarecrow, Steve's corn-obsessed scarecrow were introduced in SMG4: The E G G and SMG4: 🌽🌽🌽🌽𝓒𝓸𝓻𝓷🌽🌽🌽🌽, respectively. On April Fool's Day, a video called SMG4: Goodbye Meggy was uploaded as a prank to SMG4's Discord server and was quickly taken down. Meggy moved out of Inkopolis and into the Mushroom Kingdom in SMG4: Meggy Moves In and became a police officer in SMG4: Officer Meggy. SMG4: War On Beeg SMG4 introduced Shroomy's anti-counterpart, Anti-Shroomy, which played a bigger role in SMG4: The Demon Among Us. Like Saiko, Axol's appearances have shown a massive decrease. On the other hand, Bowser started to appear more often again with SMG4's Gang until SMG4: The Demon Among Us. Toad also slightly appeared more often but he mostly appeared in cameo appearances with only a few bigger roles.

In June, SMG3 returns as a villain in the fourth story arc, The YouTube Arc, which started with SMG4: Mario's Spicy Day 🔥. He was given original voice lines by James Bailey, following SMG4's voice lines in the previous season. The arc introduced Whimpu, a meek counterpart to Saiko Bichitaru, and the SMG4 version of Belle Fontiere, the secondary antagonist/anti-hero from Meta Runner. They, along with JubJub, Rob, Luigi Doll, and Melony from SMG4 Christmas 2019: Mario Alone joined SMG3 to form the Anti-Cast, who aimed to put an end to SMG4's Gang and Susan Wojcicki and take over SMG4's channel. The arc ended with SMG4: War Of The Fat Italians 2020, with Meggy Spletzer being given new voice lines by Lizzie Freeman rather than Inkling voice clips.

Following the YouTube Arc, the videos have become more experimental, characters such as Tari, Saiko, Shroomy, Axol, Chris, Swagmaster6969696969, and SMG4 himself began to appear less frequently, Peach Toadstool replaced Mr. Monitor as the proper authority figure until SMG4: Cooking with Mario & Bowser: World Tour, Steve started to appear more after his playable appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and there have been more videos where Mario is the only major character to appear. In October, the channel gained more than 4 million subscribers with, SMG4: The Fan Written Episode (4 Mill Sub Special) being released on October 24 as a commemoration.

SMG4: War of the Simps featured a guest appearance by Nathaniel Bandy, which was teased in Bandy's video about Meta Runner, which SMG4 guest starred in. November also saw the return of the Cooking with Bowser and Mario series with SMG4: Cooking with Mario & Bowser: World Tour, as well as Melony receiving a human form in SMG4: Mario's Mask Of Madness, thanks to the Fierce Deity Mask. Mr. Monitor also returned in the former video, and went back to his original personality in SMG4: If Mario Was In... Cyberpunk 2077.

December saw the return of shorts to the main series, a first since Super Mario 64 Shorts: Toad has a secret in Season 6, with SMG4 Shorts: Meggy Learns Japanese. The season would ultimately reach its end with both the annual Christmas special, titled SMG4 Christmas Special 2020, and the SMG4 2020 COLLAB SPECIAL.

Events

• SMG4 Movie: Meggy's Destiny, the first-ever movie by Glitch Productions, was released on February 29.
• Luigi was promoted to being the main character, alongside Mario and SMG4. However, he still remains as a deuteragonist overall. This marks the first time an addition of such a character since SMG4's addition in Season 3.
• Season 2 of Meta Runner premiered on October 16. Like Season 1, it was funded by Screen Australia.
• SMG4: War Of The Fat Italians 2020, the tenth in the series, was released on August 22, 2020.
• SMG4: SSENMODNAR - 3,826,412 SUB SPECIAL, the nineteenth Ssenmodnar, was released on June 27.
• SMG3 received his own permanent voice actor, James Bailey.
• The YouTube Arc took place from June to August, focusing on the aftermaths of the episodes SMG4: Mario's Spicy Day 🔥 and SMG4: Mario Gets【Ｗｏｋｅ】.
• Meggy Spletzer received her first voice actor, Lizzie Freeman, replacing voice clips by Yuki Tsujii from War Of The Fat Italians 2020 until SMG4: The Cursed Tapes.
• GLITCH, a sister channel to the SMG4 channel for animated series such as Meta Runner and Sunset Paradise, was launched on August 28, and the SMG4 channel was reverted back to how it was.
  • Meta Runner: New Game+, a movie consisting of all ten episodes of Season 1 of Meta Runner, was also released on the channel on August 28.
• Belle, Whimpu, JubJub, & Rob all become available to download from the Garry's Mod workshop page on Steam on September 29th, together as the "SMG4 Anti Cast Pack" bundle.
• The SMG4 channel amassed 4 million subscribers. To celebrate, SMG4: The Fan Written Episode (4 Mill Sub Special) was released on October 24.
• Melony gained a new human redesign from SMG4: Mario's Mask Of Madness and onward.
  • Melony's new design became available to download from the Garry's Mod workshop page on Steam on December 1st.
• SMG4 2020 COLLAB SPECIAL, the twentieth in the series, was released on December 26 to commemorate the end of Season 10 and 2020.

Criticisms and controversies

The episode, SMG4: Officer Meggy was panned by viewers, due to its police-related plot. The episode itself was released not long after the death of George Floyd by police brutality, sparking the George Floyd Protests.

The episode, SMG4: SSENMODNAR - 3,826,412 SUB SPECIAL got demonetized by YouTube nearly two days later after being aired. This is due to one scene where Teletubbies were made extra thick based on a Reddit suggestion, thus marking the video as "sexual behavior, language or expressions".

Trivia

• This is the first season since Season 4 to not have a proper Valentine's Day video, instead having SMG4: If Mario was in The Sonic Movie.
  • However, SMG4 states that Sonic and Swagmaster's "love story" counted as the video.
• Compared to the previous season, Shroomy, Bowser, Toad, Wario, SMG3, Toadette, Yoshi, Kermit The Frog, Lakitu, Bowser Jr., Old Man Hobo and the Teletubbies have appeared more often in this season.
  • So far, this is the season where Saiko and Axol appear the least after their debuts in 2018 and 2019, demoting them to recurring characters. Saiko would finally appear as a minor character in SMG4 Movie: Meggy's Destiny and would not have a major role until SMG4: Mario's Inside Story. Axol's only major roles so far are SMG4: Mario School Club, SMG4 Movie: Meggy's Destiny, SMG4: The Internet Graveyard, and SMG4: Food Wars. After Food Wars, Saiko didn’t appear until SMG4: TEXTURES NOT FOUND and Axol didn’t appear until SMG4: Mario's Mask Of Madness. Axol was also reduced into an occasional member of SMG4's Gang.
  • Jeeves has been reduced to a background character, with only five brief cameo appearances and no speaking roles.
  • Steve didn’t have a major role until SMG4: SSENMODNAR - 3,826,412 SUB SPECIAL and a main role until SMG4: Steve Fights Everyone almost near the end of the season.
  • Toad gained much less screen time than Shroomy, because he rarely appeared with SMG4's Gang in favor of Shroomy. However, he appeared a little more than the previous season so far but like Wario most of his appearances are non-speaking roles and cameos. Only a few of his appearances are speaking- and major roles.
  • Meggy surprisingly has very few major roles compared to the prior season, with most of her appearances being short cameos. As of SMG4: Mario's Inside Story, Tari has more roles than her. She began to appear more after SMG4: Cooking with Mario & Bowser: World Tour.
  • Waluigi and Toadsworth appear the least after their respective debuts, with around 5-8 appearances and only having two speaking roles.
• Belle Fontiere from the animated web series Meta Runner makes her first appearance in the SMG4 series, thus making her the first character to appear from Meta Runner other than Tari.
• This season marks the final appearance of Desti after the events of SMG4 Movie: Meggy's Destiny where she went back into the afterlife. Luke Lerdwichagul also confirmed that she will never make another appearance since Meggy has completed her quest to win the Splatfest. However, this has not stopped her death being poorly represented in SMG4: Mario's Magical TV (prior to the movie), S̶M̶G̶4̶: I Can't Believe It's Not SMG4! and SMG4: Meggy's Part-Time Job, in addition to cameos and mentions in SMG4: Meggy Moves In, SMG4: SMG4 🅴🆇🅿🅰🅽🅳🆂 His Brain and SMG4 2020 COLLAB SPECIAL, although the last blooper was fanmade.
• This season marks the return of variable openings after Season 5. However, they are limited to just a quote.
  • In the final two episodes of The YouTube Arc, there is also an SMG3 // Snitch Productions opening.
• This season introduces the most major original characters, with eight.
• This season is the first season since Season 8 (with SMG4: Waluigi's Time) to use at least one episode with maps in Super Mario 64 rather than Garry's Mod, with SMG4: Deleted using maps used in previous SMG4 bloopers.
• Excluding JubJub's first appearance and SMG4: If Mario Was In Meta Runner (as that was a parody of the entire series), Whimpu and Rob the Scarecrow are the only members of the Anti-Cast to have central roles in SMG4: TEXTURES NOT FOUND and SMG4: The Corn Trip respectively.
• Both Hank Hill and Barack Obama make a number of cameos this year, filling the roles of a character who are only used for jokes.
