The Amazing Digital Circus is an Australian-American adult computer-animated surreal slapstick comedy web series created by American YouTube animator and composer Gooseworx and produced and self-funded by Glitch Productions for GLITCH.
It is the fourth animated series by Glitch Productions, following Murder Drones. Digital Circus also surpassed Vivziepop's Hazbin Hotel as the most viewed indie animation pilot on YouTube, gaining over 100 million views in a single month. The first episode premiered on October 13, 2023 while the latest episode premiered on October 4, 2024.
On September 22, GLITCH announced that this series will be on Netflix.[2] It was released with all 3 episodes following the release of The Mystery Of Mildenhall Manor.
A girl gets trapped in a crazy virtual world along with five other humans and is now subject to the whims of wacky AI and their own personal traumas.[3]
Gooseworx's Description[]
The Amazing Digital Circus is about a rogue AI that relentlessly tortures 6 human souls for its own amusement.[4]
Production[]
Gooseworx is an independent animator and musician, having made shorts such as "Little Runmo" and worked on the music for Hazbin Hotel. While working on the latter, she was recruited by Glitch to work as a showrunner, where she pitched The Amazing Digital Circus.
The main protagonist of the show. She is a jester and one of the six humans trapped in the Digital Circus, where she falls victim to dangerous stunts. As a result of her arrival, she lost her memory of her real name, much like the other humans.
One of the two deuteragonists of the show. She is one of the six humans trapped in the titular circus and the deuteragonist of the show, she's referred to as "the sweetest little optimist" and appears to be constantly happy even after getting stabbed in the head by a cleaver. Her design is a reference to Raggedy Ann from the 1977 film Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure.[7]
One of the two deuteragonists of the show. he is one of the six humans trapped in the titular circus and the tritagonist of the show, he resembles a purple anthropomorphic rabbit in pink overalls, said to be a bad influence and something of a rebel. Gooseworx stated on Twitter that he is her favorite character, calling him an "awful boye".[9]
The secondary antagonist who is an AI entity created by Caine[12]. Bubble is a sentient bubble creature that lives in his hat. They have a large, sharp-toothed face and appear to have a destructive and unhinged behavior, much to Caine's dismay/annoyance.
One of the six humans trapped in the titular circus, she wears a mask that's very easy to break and appropriately displays her current emotions, namely whether she's happy or sad.
One of the six humans trapped in the titular circus, he is a chess piece reassembled as a king and has most likely resided in the circus for the longest time out of the six. As a result, he's gone a bit crazy as seen in the pilot.[16]
One of the six humans trapped in the titular circus. They are made out of random objects that can be swapped or removed. Their appearance is based on Mix & Match toys from the 90s. No one (not even Zooble themselves) knows what gender Zooble is.[18]
The gang are back together to go on their next SPOOKY adventure. Kinger gets a shotgun! Zooble goes to therapy! Pomni goes to hell! So much fun awaits!!!!!
Additionally, the show won't be releasing its episodes weekly.
This is the second Glitch show to be created by a non-Australian showrunner (as Gooseworx is American), the first being Murder Drones, which is created by American animator Liam Vickers.
Additionally, this is the first Glitch show to be created by a female showrunner.
Gooseworx described the show as "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream with the aesthetic of an I Spy book". Additionally, the series closely resembles the style from the show Popee the Performer.
Gooseworx later elaborated on the former comparison, noting that "instead of AM being the living embodiment of hate, he's a fun-loving wacky little guy".[20]
Another difference between I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream and The Amazing Digital Circus is the number of humans involved. For the former, there are five humans (four males and one female), while the latter has six humans (three females, two males, and one unknown gender)
Gooseworx was previously asked if she would collaborate with SMG4 on her CuriousCat account, though at that time, she was unaware of his existence.[21]
This would be the second Glitch Productions show to be voiced by Lizzie Freeman, the first one being Sunset Paradise.
Gooseworx stated on Twitter that none of the characters in the show have any private parts. However, this was a joke.
The main characters' designs are all based on old childhood toys, mainly ones around the 70s to 90s.
Pomni is based on a jester plush/puppet.
Caine is based on chattering teeth.
Ragatha is based on ragdolls.
Jax is based on stretchy/rubber toys.
Gangle is most likely based on the dancing ribbon on a stick and pantomine masks.
Bubble is based on big bubbles that appear from bubble toys.
Kinger is based on a king chess piece.
Zooble is based on mix-and-match toys.
Kaufmo is based on the clown bowling pins due to his head shape.
Kaufmo is the first abstracted character to be present in the series.
Additionaly, he was placed into the cellar to join the other abstracted characters in the show.
The Amazing Digital Circus is the first GLITCH show to have an Arabic, Hungarian, Indonesian and Thai dub.
In addition, unlike Murder Drones, it received a German Dub immediately after release.
In India the show also had a Hindi Dub.
Pomni finding the exit only to come across many similar rooms is inspired by The Stanley Parable.
The pilot also received an Annie Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement for Character Animation in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production.
The series is, so far, the most watched Indie animated show on YouTube. It surpassed the pilot of the former most-watched GLITCH series, Murder Drones, which has 44 million views as of this writing. The Amazing Digital Circus has 266 million more views than Murder Drones.
This is the only Glitch show:
To not have its soundtrack composed by AJ DiSpirito.
Whenever someone curses a censor bar covers his or her's mouth (or for Zooble's reaction, the middle finger in the pilot).
This is not the case where, hell and damned isn't censored in the latest episode.
This series is also the second Glitch’s animated series to be not only on Youtube, but also on a streaming service, Netflix, the first is Meta Runner with Crunchyroll. Surprisingly, it become the most viewed indie animatied series on Netflix, being top 3 of most viewed series
Episode 1 and 3 contain references to ROBLOX DOORS. (references are in said pages trivia.)
